As has been custom, the day began with cappuccino and a croissant. After a quick breakfast, it was back to the Vatican for Mass. The Mass was held in St. Pietro’s Basillica and was an entirely Latin Mass. This was my first Latin Mass and although it was interesting, I feel that I get more out of Mass when I can understand it. I then made my way outside to wait for the Pope’s noon benediction. Although he was way up there and difficult to see, it was still worth it. By this time I was pretty hungry so I grabbed a bite to eat and headed off to see my first Italian futball game! For those of you who don’t know, this is what Americans call soccer. What an experience! To see and hear all of the fans was amazing. Roma was playing against Messina. After the first half Messina was up by 2 points. To see the fans of the opposing team when they scored was hilarious. There were plenty of armed guards on hand to prevent any fights. Then by half way through the second half Roma had scored 2 points to tie the game! The rest of the half was quite intense until….GOAL! Roma scored another one to make it 3-2! The game continued with a few close calls, but Roma won and everyone was happy. After the game, I made my way back to the hostel and talked with a few people along the way. Met a guy from Maryland and then a couple back at the hostel who were from England. I can’t quite remember the town, but they were nice to talk with. Got quite a bit of information for upcoming London trips. Again it was an early night so I could get up early and head to the Vatican Museums for the morning.
